Using Plus Addressing

What is Plus Addressing?

Plus addressing (also known as sub-addressing or tagged addressing) is an industry-accepted technique used to help organize and filter emails by creating unique email addresses for different purposes while using one single email account.

We use plus addressing to generate a Backup Client ID for client-specific reports that otherwise don't provide one.

If your backup method already natively provides company data in its emails, there's no need to set up plus addressing. If you're not sure, contact our support team rock stars and they can check this for you!

Setting up Plus Addressing

Plus Addressing (Alias).png

  1. While directing email notifications from a backup application to Backup Radar, add "+" and your desired alias to the local part of your Backup Radar email address.

For example, if your Backup Radar email address is AwesomeMSP@eu.backupradar.com, you can create plus addresses like:
    • AwesomeMSP+VandelayIndustries@eu.backupradar.com
    • AwesomeMSP+SiriusCyberneticsCorporation@eu.backupradar.com
    • AwesomeMSP+WayneEnterprises@eu.backupradar.com

Note: The original email address (without the alias) must be valid. The local part should be unique for every company that your MSP serves. Regular character restrictions for SMTP email addresses apply (e.g. no spaces).

  2. Navigate to Manage > Activate Backups (or Manage > Edit Backups, if you're using templates to auto-activate your backups) and search for your alias in the Backup Client ID column to confirm that your alias is being picked up by Backup Radar.
Manage > Activate Backups > Search for your Alias.png

  3. You can repeat this technique with any backup product you'd like to report to Backup Radar using a Backup Client ID.

What’s next?

Now that you’ve set up plus addressing for your email notifications, you’ll want to assign your clients to your backups. See Automated Company Mapping Setup for detailed steps on how to do this.
