Backup Radar can parse supported email notifications from Synology NAS devices. Configure Synology to send the notifications you want to monitor to your Backup Radar mailbox, then verify that the messages arrive in the app.

Note: This article captures third-party steps and/or an interface that may have since been updated.

Supported Synology email types

Backup Radar supports parsing more than 150 Synology email formats. The primary job types include:

  • Active Backup for Business

  • Active Backup for Google Workspace and G Suite

  • Active Backup for Microsoft 365

  • C2 Backup

  • DiskStation backup, replication, synchronization, and health reports

  • Hyper Backup

  • RackStation backup and storage reports

  • USB Copy and NAS-to-USB jobs

  • Shared Folder Sync and scheduled replication jobs

  • Storage, disk health, I/O, checksum, and space alerts

The exact notification types available depend on the Synology package and DSM version. Backup results can report success, failure, or warning statuses, depending on the notification type. Some non-backup notifications are treated as alerts in Backup Radar.

Who can use this feature?

Users with access to the Synology NAS notification settings and a Backup Radar email address.

What you’ll need

  • Your Backup Radar email address.

  • Access to the Synology NAS’s DiskStation Manager (DSM).

  • Permission to edit Synology email notification messages.

Configure Synology email notifications

Follow the steps below to send supported Synology email notifications to Backup Radar.

  1. In DiskStation Manager, go to Control Panel > Notification.

  2. On the Email tab, configure the following settings:

    • Recipient Email Address: Enter your Backup Radar email address.

      • Subject Prefix: Enter the name of the NAS.

      • Service provider, SMTP server, port, and authentication: Enter the values required by your email relay.

      • Sender name and Sender email: Enter the sender details. If you use an open relay, enter the sending email address that you want to use.

  3. Click Apply, then send a test email. Confirm that the message appears in your Backup Radar email mailbox. For more details, see Viewing your email mailbox in app.

  4. Open the Advanced tab and select the Synology events you want Backup Radar to monitor.

  5. For each event you want to monitor, select the Email checkbox.

Synology’s interface and available notification events can vary by DSM version. For the current Synology instructions, see Email notification.

Verify the notifications in Backup Radar

After you enable the notifications, send a test or generate a supported Synology report. Confirm that the email arrives in your Backup Radar mailbox and that the result appears in the app.

Each alert type that Synology sends can generate a separate alert policy. To limit unnecessary alerts, enable only the event emails that you want to monitor.

Important: Keep the default email structure

Most partners can use Synology’s default email structure without making changes. Backup Radar’s parser relies on that structure, so custom subjects or message content can prevent an email from being recognized or can cause results from the same task to appear as separate backup records.

If a Synology email isn’t parsed, verify that the notification uses the default structure:

  1. On the Advanced tab, select the event notification.

  2. Click Edit Message.

  3. In the window that appears, click Reset to restore the default subject and message body.

  4. Save or apply the change.

Repeat these steps for each event notification that isn’t parsed. If the notification still isn’t recognized, send the raw email file as an .eml attachment to the Backup Radar Support team for review.
