Hi there!
When you no longer need to actively monitor a backup in Backup Radar, you can either retire it or delete it. Both options remove the backup from active monitoring and stop it from counting toward your license usage, but they handle the backup’s history and future results differently.
Retiring versus deleting a backup
|
Retiring |
Deleting |
|---|---|---|
Backup data |
Preserved. History is saved. |
Removed from Backup Radar. History is cleared after the nightly purge. |
License usage |
No longer counts toward your license. |
No longer counts toward your license. |
Future results |
New results continue to parse, but they are muted and ignored. |
A new result received before the nightly purge reinstates the backup with its previous history. After the nightly purge, a new result creates a new backup entry with no link to the previous record. |
Reversible |
Yes. You can reactivate a retired backup at any time. |
No. After the nightly purge, the backup can reappear only when Backup Radar receives a new result from the backup vendor. It is created as a new backup without its previous history. |
In short, retire a backup when you want to stop monitoring it but preserve its history. Delete a backup when you want to permanently remove it and its data from Backup Radar.
For more details about these settings, see Understanding your Backups: Retire Backups.
Ticket closure options
When you retire or delete a backup, Backup Radar displays a pop-up window with two ticket closure options:
Close the ticket in Backup Radar only. This marks the ticket as closed in Backup Radar, but does not close the associated PSA ticket.
Close the ticket in Backup Radar and PSA. This marks the ticket as closed in Backup Radar and automatically closes any open PSA tickets associated with the backups you retire or delete.
Where to retire or delete backups
You can retire or delete backups from the following locations:
Manage > Active Backups: Select the backups you want to remove, then select Bulk Retire or Bulk Delete at the top of the screen.
Manage > Edit Backups: Select the backups you want to remove, then select Bulk Retire or Bulk Delete at the top of the screen.
Audit: Select the backups you want to remove, then select Retire or Delete at the bottom of the screen.
Backup plans and Daily Activity: Bulk actions are not available, and you cannot delete the backup. To retire one, select the yellow clock icon in the Actions column. Backups must be retired individually, one at a time.

Retiring a backup
Follow the steps below to retire one or more backups in your Backup Radar account.
Go to one of the locations described in Where to retire or delete backups, then select the backup or backups you want to retire.
Select Bulk Retire on a Manage page or Retire on the Audit page. For backups on backup plans or shown on the Daily Activity page, select the yellow clock icon in the Actions column instead.
Add a reason for retiring, then select Retire.
Caution: When you retire a backup, any future results for that backup are silently muted. If the backup is still running, you will not receive alerts or tickets if it starts failing. Only retire a backup when you are confident that you no longer need to monitor it—for example, if the client has left your organization or the backup job has been permanently decommissioned.
After you retire a backup
The retired backup is available under Manage > Retired Backups.
It no longer appears on the Dashboard, Audit, or Active Reports screens.
New results continue to parse, but they are muted and no longer count toward license usage.
The backup’s history is preserved.
To reactivate a retired backup, see Reactivating your Retired Backups.
Deleting a backup
Follow the steps below to delete one or more backups from your Backup Radar account.
Caution: Deleting a backup permanently removes it and its historical data from Backup Radar. This action cannot be undone. If you want to stop monitoring a backup while keeping its history, retire it instead.
Go to one of the locations described in Where to retire or delete backups, then select the backup or backups you want to delete.
Select Bulk Delete on a Manage page or Delete on the Audit page.
Confirm the deletion.
Note: Backup Radar processes deletions through a nightly purge. If a new result is received before the nightly purge runs, the backup is reinstated with its previous history intact. If a new result is received after the nightly purge, a new backup entry is created with no historical data.
After you delete a backup
The backup is removed from Backup Radar after the nightly purge.
Its historical data is cleared after the nightly purge.
It no longer appears on any Backup Radar screens.
If Backup Radar receives a new result for the deleted backup in the future, it automatically creates a new entry. You may need to activate the new backup to resume active monitoring. Depending on your configuration, it may be activated automatically through a template or backup plan.
