Hello! In this article, we'll cover how to monitor Datto Endpoint Backup V2 (Kaseya / Unitrends MSP portal) in Backup Radar. There are two ways to do it:

  • API integration (recommended) — Backup Radar connects directly to the Datto Endpoint Backup V2 public API and pulls in your clients, backup results and alerts automatically.
  • Email ingestion — Datto sends a scheduled Executive Summary report to your Backup Radar mailbox. Use this if you can't use the API integration.

Note: The Datto Endpoint Backup V2 API integration is currently in limited release. If you don't see the Datto Endpoint Backup tile in Backup Radar, contact support to request access, or use the email method below in the meantime.

This integration is separate from the Datto BCDR API integration. If you also use Datto BCDR (SIRIS/ALTO), set that up separately.

Who can set this up: Backup Radar administrators, and standard users who have been granted access to integrations.

Option 1: API integration (recommended)

What you'll need

  • A Superuser account in the Datto Endpoint Backup V2 / Unitrends MSP portal (portal.backup.net). Only Superusers can create API credentials.
  • Access to Backup Radar with permission to manage integrations.

Step 1: Create API credentials in the Datto portal

  1. Sign in to the MSP portal at portal.backup.net as a Superuser.
  2. Go to Settings > Public APIs.
  3. Click New to create a new API client.
  4. Copy the Client ID and Client Secret. Store the secret somewhere safe — you may not be able to view it again.

For Kaseya's own instructions, see How to get a bearer token for the MSP portal API. You only need the Client ID and Client Secret; Backup Radar handles the token exchange for you.

Step 2: Add the integration in Backup Radar

  1. In Backup Radar, go to Integration > Backup Integrations.
  2. Under Available, select the Datto Endpoint Backup tile.
  3. Enter the Client ID and Client Secret from Step 1.
  4. Click Save. Backup Radar checks the credentials with Datto before saving. If they're rejected, you'll see an error — double-check that you copied both values correctly and that the API client is still active in the Datto portal.

Once saved, the integration moves to the Connected section. Your credentials are stored securely and are never displayed in plain text after saving.

Step 3: Import and map your clients

  1. Open the integration and select Import Clients to pull in your Datto customers.
  2. Map each Datto customer to the matching company in Backup Radar. For more detail, see Mapping clients to their backups.

Step 4: Activate your backups

After the first sync, your backups appear in Backup Radar. Activate them the same way you would for any other integration:

  • Templates accounts: see Activating your backups.
  • Backup Plans accounts: see Adding a Backup Plan.

What gets monitored

Backup Radar pulls the following from the Datto Endpoint Backup V2 API:

Data How it appears in Backup Radar
Backups One result per protected device, using the device name and the appliance name as the job name. Status comes from the backup status in Datto (Successful, Warning, Failed).
Replications (offsite) A separate result per device, with the job name <appliance name> - Offsite Backup. Status comes from the replication status in Datto.
System alerts Appliance-level alerts, with the job name <appliance name> - Alert. Critical alerts show as Failure and warnings as Warning.
Job alerts Job-level alerts tied to a specific device, with the job name <appliance name> - Alert. Critical alerts show as Failure and warnings as Warning.

A few things to know:

  • In-progress backups aren't recorded until they finish. Backup Radar looks back over recent activity on each sync, so they're picked up once complete.
  • Muted or dismissed alerts in the Datto portal are not imported.
  • Conditional alerts (for example, "Backup was not completed within 24 hours") are not imported, because Backup Radar already tracks missed backups through your backup schedule.
  • Helix alerts are not imported.

Option 2: Email ingestion

Use this method if you can't use the API integration.

What you'll need

  • Access to the Datto Endpoint Backup V2 portal and to Backup Radar.
  • Your Backup Radar mailbox address (under Integration > Mailboxes).
  • Access to the Datto organizations or sites you want to monitor.

Set up the report in Datto

  1. Open the reporting or email report settings in the Datto portal.
  2. Create or edit a scheduled report for each organization or site.
  3. Select the Executive Summary report.
  4. Set the date range to 7 days.
  5. Set the format to HTML. Backup Radar can't read the PDF version.
  6. Set the schedule to daily.
  7. Enter your Backup Radar mailbox as the recipient and save.
  8. Send a test report to the mailbox.

Confirm Backup Radar received it

In Backup Radar, open the mailbox under Integration > Mailboxes. The report should show Saved Results. If it shows Unrecognized, the report usually isn't the Executive Summary in HTML format with an HTML attachment.

Then activate your backups as described in Step 4 above. If a backup isn't assigned to a company automatically, see Mapping clients to their backups. If the report doesn't include client information, see Using plus addressing.

Switching from email to API? Once the API integration is running and your backups are activated, turn off the scheduled Executive Summary reports in Datto and retire the old email-based backups in Backup Radar so you don't monitor the same devices twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use the API or email? Use the API if it's available on your account. It doesn't depend on scheduled reports, picks up replications and alerts as separate results, and avoids issues with report formats changing.

Why can't I see the Datto Endpoint Backup tile? The API integration is in limited release. Contact support to request access.

My credentials won't save. What should I check? Make sure the API client was created by a Superuser under Settings > Public APIs, that you copied both the Client ID and Client Secret in full, and that the client hasn't been deleted or rotated in the Datto portal.

My clients imported, but no backups are showing. What should I do? Allow time for the first sync to complete. If backups still don't appear after a day, submit a support ticket and include your Backup Radar account name.

Will backups that no longer exist in Datto be retired automatically? Not yet. The Datto Endpoint Backup V2 API doesn't report whether a device has been removed or disabled, so auto-retire isn't available for this integration. Retire those backups manually in Backup Radar.

Is this the same as the Datto BCDR integration? No. Datto BCDR (SIRIS/ALTO) has its own API integration. Set up each one separately if you use both.
