Auto-Retirement keeps your Backup Radar dashboards clean by retiring backups that have stopped reporting. Once a day, Backup Radar checks every active backup and retires any that have received no results for the number of days you choose. It works for backups monitored through both API integrations and email parsers.
What happens when a backup is retired
- The backup stops alerting.
- It is hidden from dashboards and reports.
- An activity log entry is added with the reason, for example: "Retired automatically: no backup results were received for 50 days."
- Optionally, related PSA tickets are closed (see below).
You can restore a retired backup at any time (see Reactivating your Retired Backups). If it still hasn't received new results, the next daily run will retire it again.
Before you start
- You need permission to update tenant settings to change Auto-Retirement. Users who can only view settings will see the page in read-only mode.
- Choose the period carefully. Set it to at least twice your longest backup schedule so backups aren't retired by mistake. For example, use 70 days or more if you have monthly jobs.
Turn on Auto-Retirement for all backups
- Go to Settings → Auto-Retirement.
- Turn on Retire Backups Without Results Automatically.
- In Days Without Results, enter a value from 7 to 365 days. The default is 50 days.
- (Optional) Turn on Close Related PSA Tickets When a Backup Is Auto-Retired.
- Click Save Changes.
The value you set here is the global period and applies to every backup unless an integration overrides it.
Override the period for a specific integration
Integrations that support Auto-Retirement can use their own period, or opt out entirely.
- Go to Integrations → Backup Integrations and open the integration.
- Turn on Override the global number of days without results.
- Choose one of the following:
- Use a different period: keep Retire backups without results automatically on and enter the number of days (7–365).
- Never auto-retire this integration's backups: turn Retire backups without results automatically off.
- Save the integration.
When the override is off, the integration uses the global value from Settings → Auto-Retirement.
How the global setting and overrides work together
| Global setting | Integration override | Result for that integration's backups |
|---|---|---|
| On | Off | Retired after the global number of days |
| On or off | On, with days | Retired after the integration's number of days |
| On or off | On, retirement turned off | Never auto-retired |
| Off | Off | Never auto-retired |
An integration override with days works even when the global setting is off, so you can enable Auto-Retirement for just one integration.
Closing related PSA tickets
When Close Related PSA Tickets When a Backup Is Auto-Retired is on, Backup Radar closes the open PSA tickets linked to a backup when it is retired. This setting is global only and also applies to backups that integrations retire automatically, for example when a backup is disabled in the vendor portal.
FAQ
When does the daily check run?
Once a day, at 12:00 AM (midnight) Eastern Standard Time (EST).
How is "no results" measured for a brand-new backup?
If a backup has never received a result, the period is counted from the date the backup was created in Backup Radar.
Which backups are checked?
Only active backups. Backups that are already retired are not affected.
I restored a backup and it was retired again. Why?
Restoring doesn't reset the period. If the backup still hasn't received a result within the configured number of days, the next daily run retires it again. Fix the backup job, or turn off Auto-Retirement for its integration.
